Federal Minister for IT and Telecom Shaza Khawaja has called on the Finance Minister to hold a meeting of the Auction Advisory Committee to finally move ahead with the long-awaited 5G spectrum auction.
She shared that the Ministry of IT and Telecom Pakistan has formally reached out, especially now that the federal budget has wrapped up and there are no remaining hurdles from that front. According to her, the Finance Minister has shown personal interest in the auction, which adds to the momentum.
A detailed report prepared by an international consultant is now ready for review. Shaza explained that this report will be evaluated by the Advisory Committee before any final decisions are made regarding the auction timeline or structure.
She also highlighted a separate but related issue involving the proposed merger of two telecom companies. The matter has been referred to the Competition Commission of Pakistan, whose decision is still pending.
Shaza acknowledged that some delays have been caused by ongoing court proceedings, but made it clear that the process will only move forward once the Advisory Committee convenes, reviews the consultant’s findings, and considers all legal aspects.
