The International Finance Corporation (iFC), a member for the World Bank Group, has agreed to provide technical support to the Capital Development Authority (CDA) for three water and sewage projects in Islamabad. An agreement to this effect was signed at the CDA headquarters, attended by senior officials from the interior ministry, CDA, and the IFC.
Under the agreement, the IFC will offer transaction advisory services to the Islamabad Water Agency to implement the projects through public-private partnerships. According to the CDA, the initiative will focus on improving the supply of clean water, installing water meters, and reducing non-revenue water across the federal capital. Measures to enhance energy efficiency of water pumps and rehabilitate sewage lines and treatment plants are also included.
CDA officials said the projects are expected to strengthen monitoring systems, curb water wastage, and increase civic revenue, which will be reinvested into improving water services. The CDA chairman emphasised that modern monitoring technologies would be deployed to enhance service delivery.
While welcoming the initiative, officials noted that Islamabad faces a widening water gap, with demand exceeding 250 million gallons per day against current supply of around 70 mgd, underscoring the need for long-term solutions alongside system upgrades.
