Elon Musk has announced the formation of a new political party, the America Party, positioning it as a direct challenge to the current two-party structure in the United States. The announcement came via his platform X, weeks after a very public and dramatic fallout with former ally President Donald Trump. Musk, who cannot run for president himself due to his South African birth, has not yet shared who might lead the new party.
This move follows months of rising tension between Musk and Trump. Their relationship was once close. It deteriorated sharply after Musk stepped down from his role in the administration earlier this year. The break became public when Musk criticised Trump’s latest tax and spending legislation, which passed despite its projected $3 trillion addition to the national deficit.
Referencing a user poll he conducted on X, Musk claimed that Americans are ready for something new. “You want a new political party and you shall have it,” he wrote. Still, there is no official confirmation that the America Party has been registered with the Federal Electoral Commission. Historically, third parties in the US have struggled to break through the dominance of Democrats and Republicans.
