Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif expressed optimism on Tuesday that the memorandum of understanding signed in Islamabad with Iranian President Masoud Pezeshkian would soon transform into a formal agreement, marking a new chapter in bilateral relations. Speaking at a joint press conference, the premier emphasized that Pakistan and Iran had consistently stood by each other during difficult times, underscoring the depth of their brotherhood.
Shehbaz Sharif paid tribute to Deputy Prime Minister Ishaq Dar and his team for their services, while also commending Field Marshal Asim Munir for his dedication during negotiations. He extended gratitude to Türkiye, Egypt, Qatar, and Saudi Arabia for their support in the peace process, acknowledging the trust placed in Pakistan’s mediation efforts.
The prime minister conveyed condolences over the reported martyrdom of Ayatollah Ali Khamenei, calling it a major loss, and praised the foresight of Iranian Supreme Leader Mojtaba Khamenei. He stressed that Iran’s success was Pakistan’s success, adding that the courage and unity of the Iranian people during recent crises had been exemplary.
During delegation-level talks, Shehbaz Sharif clarified that Iran’s missile program was not part of any negotiations, stating, “It cannot be that other countries have missiles while Iran does not.” He warned of attempts by external actors to sabotage peace efforts but reaffirmed that Pakistan and Iran had become “brothers forever.”
President Pezeshkian’s visit included meetings with President Asif Ali Zardari, where discussions focused on bilateral relations, economic cooperation, and regional peace. Zardari congratulated Pezeshkian on the signing of the Islamabad MoU and expressed hope that ongoing technical negotiations would contribute to lasting stability.
