Karachi Port begins handling UAE-bound transhipment cargo after shipping disruptions linked to the Strait of Hormuz crisis.
Karachi Port Trust has begun handling transhipment cargo destined for the United Arab Emirates after shipping disruptions in the Gulf linked to tensions involving the United States, Israel and Iran.
Port officials said large container vessels that normally use regional hub ports have started offloading UAE-bound cargo at Karachi Port following the closure of the Strait of Hormuz and increased security risks in the region.
Under typical shipping routes, major container vessels unload cargo at hub ports in the UAE, where goods are transferred to smaller feeder vessels serving destinations such as Pakistan, Central Asia, Afghanistan and parts of East Africa.
However, shipping lines have begun diverting shipments to Karachi as a precaution during the ongoing regional crisis.
Two container vessels, MV TS Tacoma and MV TS Sydney, arrived at the port on Friday carrying containers from shipping lines including TS Lines, Heung-A Shipping and Sinokor Merchant Marine.
The cargo will later be transported via feeder vessels to Jebel Ali Port in the UAE.
Shahid Ahmed, Chairman of Karachi Port Trust, said the port authority is working to ensure continuity of regional and international trade operations despite disruptions in the Middle East.
