Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif has reaffirmed Pakistan’s support for the International Atomic Energy Agency’s (IAEA) role in promoting the responsible and peaceful use of nuclear technology during his official visit to Vienna.
Meeting IAEA Director General Rafael Mariano Grossi at the Vienna International Centre, the prime minister emphasised Pakistan’s commitment to the agency’s work in cancer diagnosis and treatment, agriculture, nuclear power generation and industrial applications. He noted that Pakistan is not only a beneficiary of the IAEA’s technical cooperation programmes but also contributes expertise, training and technical support to other member states.
Grossi acknowledged Pakistan’s experience in peaceful nuclear applications and praised the quality of its engineers and scientists. He highlighted Pakistan’s contributions to nuclear safety and security and said the country was well placed to assist other member states.
During the visit, an agreement was signed designating the Institute of Nuclear Medicine and Oncology (INMOL) in Lahore as an IAEA collaborating centre, strengthening cooperation in cancer care and nuclear medicine services.
Addressing a separate event on sustainable development, the prime minister called for inclusive and equitable global growth, stressing that developing countries disproportionately bear climate and economic pressures despite minimal emissions contributions.
