The government plans to invest $1 billion in artificial intelligence by 2030, with new scholarships, training programmes, and AI education across the country.
Pakistan plans to invest one billion dollars in artificial intelligence by 2030, Prime Minister Shehbaz Sharif announced during the opening ceremony of Indus AI Week 2026 in Islamabad.
The prime minister said the investment aims to build a national AI ecosystem and prepare the country for future economic growth. He announced that an AI curriculum will be introduced not only in federally run schools but also in institutions across Azad Jammu and Kashmir and Gilgit Baltistan. The programme will also reach remote areas of Balochistan.
As part of the plan, the government will offer one thousand fully funded PhD scholarships in artificial intelligence by 2030. A nationwide training programme will also be launched to teach AI skills to one million non IT professionals.
The prime minister said agriculture and the mining sector would be key areas of focus. He noted that sixty percent of Pakistan’s population is youth, and the goal is to equip them with modern skills and help IT professionals transition into AI roles.
Pakistan approved its National AI Policy in July 2025 to expand access to artificial intelligence and create new job opportunities. Officials say Indus AI Week marks the first step in raising awareness and preparing the country for implementation.
