Pakistan has launched the Maktab system to maintain comprehensive digital records of students, covering enrolment, grades, transcripts, and degree issuance, Minister of State for Federal Education Wajiha Qamar announced. Introduced under the Higher Education Commission (HEC Pakistan) framework, the system will initially be implemented in 25 public universities before being rolled out across all public institutions.
Speaking at a press conference in Islamabad, the minister said the platform will allow the entire academic journey of each student to be tracked on a single digital system, improving transparency and reducing administrative delays. The government also plans to integrate artificial intelligence to manage educational processes securely and enhance oversight.
Qamar said digitisation has already strengthened accountability, including digital scrutiny of tenders and monitoring through online portals at the Federal Directorate of Education (FDE). An AI-asked portal for education management is nearing completion.
She added that new digital complaint mechanisms, including e-katcheries, allow students and parents to raise concerns directly. The initiative also supports broader reforms, such as online equivalence and verification systems at the Inter Board Coordination Commission, aimed at modernising Pakistan’s education system and improving service delivery.
