The federal government is preparing to hold a high-level meeting of the Auction Advisory Committee to finalize plans for Pakistan’s first 5G spectrum auction. According to officials, the meeting will take place later this week or early next week after Finance Minister Muhammad Aurangzeb returns to the country.
The Pakistan Telecommunication Authority (PTA)’s (PTA) 5G consultant will present a detailed report covering key elements such as spectrum valuation, pricing strategy, coverage targets, and rollout obligations. This framework will guide the national strategy for deploying next generation mobile technology.
Sources told Business Recorder that the auction is expected to be held in February or March next year. Initially planned for late 2025, the process was delayed due to ongoing court cases over spectrum allocation and the pending merger of Ufone 4G and Telenor, which is now under PTA review.
Industry experts say Pakistan’s 5G rollout faces challenges including operator hesitation, financial instability, heavy taxation, and limited affordability of 5G-enabled devices. They have urged the government to adopt rational pricing and flexible payment options to encourage participation and attract investment in the telecom sector.
